Shiny Bits In Between (excerpt #1 from Chapter 1, Good Bones)

Up ahead, a 'For Sale' sign nestles between the dunes, hiding in a cluster of tall sea oats and scrubby beach elder. Shading my eyes, I squint up at a little yellow house balanced atop eight skinny wooden poles, its window shades half open so that it peers back at me, as if trying to recognize a vaguely familiar face. Crossing the damp dark sand and climbing the ragged dunes, I move toward it, dodging huge ant hills trailing threads of shiny six legged insects like strings of red sea pearls.
